When Gary Player accepted the commission to design the Cliffs at Mountain Park golf course, he didn’t just fly in to supervise the work; he moved his offices there. It may have been partially the lure of one of the most relaxing town names, Travelers Rest, but Player was also always a risk taker on the golf course, and the challenges of designing a layout abutted by the Saluda River, which the Army Corps of Engineers seemed especially intent on protecting, must have intrigued the Black Knight.
When all was said and done, Player’s extra effort paid off in a design that evokes a bit of Scotland – roughly shaped bunkering plunked down amid wispy native grasses, and a linksland feel to the fairways – and some memorable trickery, such as twin tall trees in one fairway that forces a delicately placed second shot on a par 5. The Mountain Park layout is just plain fun to play.
The community itself is sited on 2,000 acres of preserved forests with views not only of the surrounding mountains, but the river and golf course as well. One of the most popular towns in the Southeast, Greenville is just 20 minutes away and offers the services and entertainments of a much larger city. It is also home to the gorgeous campus of Furman University, a great place for a stroll.
New Mountain Park homes with golf course views start above $1 million, but if you are inclined to build your dream home, lots begin just over $100,000. The Cliffs’ unique club membership – join one, such as Mountain Park, and you maintain privileges at all six within an hour’s drive – is another lure for the golf- and mountain-minded.
