History and class define the Farmington County Club, and the same is true of the community that surrounds it. Shortly before he was elected President, Thomas Jefferson drew up plans to build an addition to the Farmington Plantation’s main house, a two-room octagon that survives to this day. In 1927, local businessmen noted that the 1,000-acre property, the colonial house at its center and picturesque views of the Blue Ridge Mountains would be a perfect location for a golf course and country club. They hired the famed architect Fred Findlay who completed his work in May 1929, when the course opened for play. The Octagon Room, which had been sub-divided over the years, was restored according to Jefferson’s original design and reopened in 1976.
Unusually, Farmington includes 28 holes, 18 of them originally by Findlay and 10 renovated by the renowned golf course architecture team of Coore & Crenshaw in 2016. The layout of all 28 holes is classic, maximizing the sloping farmland and views of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. Of course, the mostly colonial style homes in the community share those views, as well as some striking lookouts onto the golf course itself. The benefits of living within a few miles of a vibrant small city with a major university, largely designed originally by Thomas Jefferson himself, cannot be underestimated, given the continuing education options, concerts, museums and other entertainment, medical care and dining that a renowned school like the University of Virginia attracts.
