Glaciers really worked their magic on the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Bounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Appalachians immediately to the west, and with a smaller range – the Massanuttens – running through it, the Shenandoahs are an underappreciated place for a golfing lifestyle.
In real estate, underestimated typically translates as under-valued and that is the case for the resort community of Shenvalee (pronounced shen-vuh-lee, with accent on the last syllable). Located in New Market, site of a famous Civil War battle, home sites of just under one-acre typically sell for around $100,000, with dramatic views not only of the golf course but also the mountains to the left and right. Homes, when for sale, are appropriately reasonably priced.
The 27 holes of golf at Shenvalee are a whole lot of fun to play, with just enough blind shots to make most players eager to return again and again to enjoy the full experience of the layout. Although dry weather can bake out the fairways – and provide an extra dozen or so yards on your drives – the greens are immaculate. On the nine hole “Olde Course,” the greens are also scary tiny and historic; in 1927, the immortal Bobby Jones inaugurated the course. The additional 18 holes were added in two nine-hole layouts, in 1964 and 1992. Shenvalee was a long time coming but certainly worth the wait.
